Hillside Garden

A difficult sloping site transformed

This plot, set on a steep Sevenoaks, Kent, hillside brought a number of challenges for our garden design and build. To create enough space for a large terrace behind the house we needed to cut into and retain the steep slope. This enabled us to create a flat lawn on the upper terrace, surrounded by softening planting beds that continued up the slope and around the near side of the large lawn, ensuring adequate separation from the wall itself. We clad the face of the wall in beautiful Larch planking that created a feature behind the lower terraces, which were paved in large format pale grey porcelain tiles, playing with scale. We divided the space and surrounded the terraces in lush planting, softening the view and making a lovely relaxation, dining and entertaining space.

The dining terrace features an understated table and chairs by Fermob and a sleek big green egg barbecue unit. A feature wooden hot tub, from Riviera Hot tubs, is surrounded by lush planting, including cascading Geranium ‘Rozanne’, specimen Ozmanthus and a small multi-stem Betula Snowqueen.
