Heritage Garden Design

Pleached Trees, Statement Topiary & Hydrangeas

Designing landscapes for heritage buildings requires a careful balance between respecting history and creating a garden that feels timeless. For this beautiful 1800s mill, our design vision was intentionally light-touch—softening the strong industrial brick architecture with elegant planting while enhancing the building’s character.

Pleached trees define the boundary and frame the approach to the mill, drawing the eye towards the architecture while screening modern surroundings. Their clean lines create structure, privacy and a sense of arrival without competing with the historic building.

Statement topiary provides year-round architectural interest, introducing crisp geometric forms that echo the strength and rhythm of the mill’s brickwork. These evergreen focal points give the garden structure in every season.

To soften the composition, we introduced generous drifts of Hydrangeas and ornamental grasses. Their abundant flowers, gentle movement and seasonal texture create a romantic contrast to the industrial architecture, bringing softness, colour and biodiversity to the landscape.

The result is a contemporary garden that celebrates the heritage of the site while creating an elegant, welcoming setting that evolves beautifully throughout the year.
